A tile shower and floor installed in a Lafayette bathroom. The rest of the room, including the oak vanity, was left as it was. This was a tile job, and the interesting part of a tile job is what goes on before any tile does.

The shower was built on a bonded waterproofing system. Orange membrane covers every wall, the seams are banded, the pan is bonded to the drain, and the recessed niche is formed out of the same waterproof board rather than cut into open framing. None of it is visible in the finished room, which is the point. A tile shower that fails almost never fails at the tile, it fails behind it, and the photo of the orange stage is the one worth looking at.

Over that, gray veined porcelain in a large format runs floor to ceiling. The niche is lined in a herringbone mosaic that picks up the same tones, a small mosaic covers the shower floor for grip and to let it fall to the drain, and a corner shelf is set into the wall at shoulder height.

The same large format tile carries out of the shower and across the bathroom floor, so the curb is the only visual break between the two.
